What does a pesticide applicator license actually cost, state by state?

How this was collected

Every row below is one US jurisdiction's published pesticide applicator fee, read off the agency that certifies applicators there (a state department of agriculture or its equivalent, and the state's testing vendor where exam pricing is set separately) and recorded with the date we checked it. Because most states price private applicator certification, commercial certification, per-category exams, and multi-year license terms separately, a state only contributes a number to the min, median, and average when its published fee reduces to exactly one unqualified dollar amount: one "$" figure, no range, no "or" alternative, and not a per-category unit price. Every other jurisdiction still appears in the full table in its published wording, and is deliberately left out of the computed figures rather than flattened into a number the agency never published. The rule is mechanical and applied to all states identically, with no per-state judgement calls.

29 of the 37 jurisdictions in this dataset publish more than one fee (private versus commercial, per category, or per license term), so they appear in the table below in their published wording and are deliberately left out of the min, median, and average above.

Notable outliers: New Mexico published applicator fee ($15 private, 5 yrs), New York published applicator fee ($450 commercial, 3 yrs).

Limitations

  • The computed figures compare published fee amounts, not equivalent products. A flat commercial license fee in one state and a five-year private applicator fee in another are both single published numbers, but they buy different things over different terms, so treat the min, median, and average as a picture of what states charge rather than as your personal cost.
  • Most state pesticide programs publish a tiered fee schedule (private versus commercial, per category, per license class) rather than one number. Those states are shown in the table but excluded from the math, so the computed statistics describe only the subset of states with a single flat published fee.
  • Fees come from agency fee schedules and license pages, not from applicators' receipts. Exam-vendor charges, county extension office charges, permit fees, late fees, and category add-ons can sit on top of the figure shown.
  • Some states in this dataset have no published fee we could confirm to a primary source in the current pass. Those state pages say so directly and carry no fee row here, rather than an estimate.
  • Fee schedules change with state rulemaking and legislative sessions. Read the verification date on each row before relying on it, and confirm with the certifying agency before you pay.
