Pesticide applicator license requirements in New York

Private applicator

New York’s Private Applicator certification is for agricultural use on land the applicator owns, rents, or manages for an employer. It costs $25 for a 5-year term, or $5 to add a secondary certification within that term. Renewal is by training credits or by retaking the exam.

Commercial applicator and commercial technician

New York separates commercial certifications into two tracks. A Commercial Technician certificate covers a single category and costs $450 for a 3-year term. A Commercial Applicator certificate allows multiple categories: $450 for the first category and $150 for each additional one, also on a 3-year term. Both require the $100 Core exam plus the relevant category exam(s). Categories include agricultural plant and animal, ornamental and turf, right-of-way, aquatic, structural, public health, and a distinct Aquatic Anti-Fouling Paint Applicator category for marina and boatyard work.

Renewal and continuing education

Commercial certifications run on a 3-year cycle, private on a 5-year cycle. Recertification requires either approved training credits or passing the relevant exam(s) again; NYSDEC specifies that the same course generally cannot be counted twice within a 12-month period.

Reciprocity

NYSDEC recognizes certifications from other states under specific reciprocity agreements, but the accepted-state list is not published as a single online table. An applicator relocating to New York should contact their DEC Regional Office to confirm whether their out-of-state credential qualifies.
