Pesticide applicator license requirements in New Mexico

Private applicator

New Mexico’s private applicator certification is for farmers and ranchers applying restricted-use pesticides on land they own or lease. Certification and renewal both cost $15, the figure set in New Mexico Administrative Code 21.17.50.25. The license runs on a 5-year period, and NMDA requires 5 CEUs earned during that period before renewal; completing a CEU course does not renew the license automatically, a separate renewal form and fee are required.

Commercial, non-commercial, and public applicators

Applicators working for hire, for a business, or for a government agency need the Core exam plus at least one category exam covering agricultural, ornamental and turf, right-of-way, aquatic, structural, or public health pest control. NMDA lists 4 CEUs as the renewal requirement for public, commercial, and non-commercial applicators, distinct from the private applicator’s 5-CEU requirement.

Renewal and continuing education

Every category renews on a 5-year cycle in New Mexico. A completed CEU course does not renew a license by itself; the applicator must also submit the renewal form and fee to NMDA’s Pesticide Management Division.

Reciprocity

NMDA does not publish a standing state-by-state reciprocity table. An applicator moving to New Mexico from another state should confirm directly with the Pesticide Management Division whether an exam waiver applies before assuming credit for an out-of-state credential.
