Pesticide applicator license requirements in Hawaii

Hawaii runs certification through the Department of Agriculture’s Pesticides Branch, with exams scheduled through the state’s Pesticides Education Portal. The 5-year certification window is longer than most mainland states, which cuts down on how often an applicator has to retest, but it also means a lapsed certificate can mean starting the exam process over rather than a quick paperwork renewal.

The fee structure rewards stacking exams: a standalone exam costs $50, but sitting the Core exam together with a category exam waives the Core fee, so a first-time commercial applicator seeking one category pays $50 total rather than $100. Private applicators only need the Core exam once, for category 1; categories 2 and 3 (which cover additional private use scopes) require category 1 first rather than standing alone.

Recertification credit has a rule worth knowing before an applicator plans their hours around a single online course: at most 75 percent of the required Continued Education Training hours can come from online coursework, with the rest required to be earned in person. Hawaii’s public certification page does not state a reciprocity policy for applicators moving from another state, so that question needs a direct call to the Pesticides Branch rather than a self-service answer.
